Grid-Tied vs Off-Grid vs Hybrid: Which Solar System Is Right for You?

July 29, 2026 · Uncategorized

Not all solar systems work the same way, and picking the right type for your property makes a real difference to both cost and reliability.

A grid-tied system connects directly to the utility grid. It’s the most affordable option since it doesn’t require battery storage, and surplus power can often be exported back to the grid under net-metering arrangements. The trade-off is that grid-tied systems typically shut down during a grid outage, for safety reasons.

An off-grid system operates completely independently, storing generated power in batteries for use at any time — day or night, grid outage or not. It’s the right choice for locations with unreliable or no grid access, though it comes at a higher upfront cost due to the battery bank.

A hybrid system combines both approaches: it draws on solar power first, stores surplus energy in batteries, and falls back to the grid only when needed. This gives you backup power during outages while still benefiting from grid connection and net metering.

The right choice depends on your grid reliability, budget and how important backup power is to you — our team can help assess your site and recommend the best fit.
